ITU-T Standardizes Framework of Low-Latency and Energy-Efficient Networks to Support the AI Era
August 21, 2026―KDDI Corporation, NTT, Inc., 1Finity Inc., a Fujitsu company and leading provider of global network solutions, NEC Corporation, Rakuten Mobile, Inc., Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. today announced that the framework of low-latency and energy-efficient networks to support the AI era has been approved as an international standard by the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) on August 13, 2026 [1]. This framework will contribute to the realization of All-Photonics Network (APN), a strategic field under the "Strategy for Realizing Next-Generation Information and Communication Infrastructure to Support AI Society - Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy 2.0 -" promoted by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. APN is expected to be deployed globally as a foundational network technology for next-generation services, including physical AI, because it enables high-capacity, low-latency, and energy-efficient communications and supports real-time processing of data obtained from sensors and robots in remote locations. Toward this goal, the IOWN Global Forum, an organization dedicated to driving the widespread adoption of APN-based next-generation communication infrastructure, is developing common technical documents on APN architecture and functional requirements. In parallel, research and development on photonic network federation technology, which enables stable interconnection among APNs operated by different providers [2], is also underway to develop interconnection methods and evaluate them using actual equipment. However, achieving global-scale interoperability and adoption, including among operators, countries or regions outside these initiatives, requires establishing a common framework based on broad international consensus. To address this challenge, Japanese telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers have collaborated to lead the development of this framework. Now standardized as Recommendation ITU-T Y.3335, the framework defines the network configurations and technical requirements for establishing low-latency, energy-efficient communication paths across different operators [3]. It systematically organizes the accumulated knowledge of APNs and research outcomes on photonic network federation technology in a manner independent of any specific organization or implementation method. The approval from ITU-T provides a common framework for APN to be shared globally, making it easier to build APN services spanning multiple operators and enabling the use of high-speed, energy-efficient communication services even across geographically distributed sites.

NEC Develops Physical AI That Anticipates Human Movement and Psychological States
Tokyo, March 12, 2026 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has developed a first-of-its-kind physical AI (*1) that proactively controls robots to help reduce human stress. This technology utilizes a proprietary "world model" (*2) from NEC to predict human movement and psychological states, quantitatively estimating a person's level of stress. The technology was developed based on a world model, an AI system that is attracting attention globally for accelerating robot adoption. It anticipates the direction a person will move based on the relative position and posture between a robot and the person, predicting the person's level of stress in real time. This enables robots to be controlled along paths and at speeds that reduce human stress. In collaborative human-robot work environments, this reduction of psychological stress can be closely linked to physical safety, helping to avoid collisions and unexpected contact. As a result, expectations are growing for robots utilizing physical AI as a solution to labor shortages and hazardous tasks. However, it is not easy for robots to control their movements based on expected human movements and psychological states. Moreover, robot behavior may cause humans to feel uneasy or tense, potentially hindering smooth collaboration. NEC developed this technology to address these challenges. The technology promotes robot deployment in environments where dedicated robot zones are not yet established, such as small-to-medium-sized logistics warehouses, factories, and retail stores with narrow aisles—locations where stress-related barriers to robot use are conventionally high. This development was achieved by integrating the knowledge and expertise NEC previously accumulated through the research and development of globally recognized models in the field of Physical AI and robot control technologies. The proprietary world model utilized by this technology was developed by combining two prediction models. This has enabled robots to predict the future level of human stress when executing a specific driving control, thereby achieving optimal driving control that anticipates human movement. As a result, it can navigate at speeds and along paths that minimize human stress while maintaining mobility efficiency and suppressing unnecessary deceleration or stops, which can contribute to resolving labor shortages and improving productivity.

NEC Demonstrates Agentic AI–Driven Autonomous Network Operations in Collaboration with AWS
Tokyo, February 27, 2026 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has successfully demonstrated a technology in which Agentic AI autonomously manages the entire lifecycle of the User Plane Function (UPF)*, a primary function of 6G/5G core networks, from design, construction, and deployment through to operational monitoring. This research achievement was realized in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Based on NEC’s expertise and experience in communications service provider networks, this demonstration was achieved by leveraging "Kiro," an AWS agentic AI with an integrated development environment (IDE) and command-line interface (CLI). As a result, NEC confirmed that the time required from network design to initial service launch, which previously required several weeks with manual configuration by network operators, can be significantly reduced to just a few hours. In addition, automated anomaly detection and self-healing operations without human intervention were also verified using an AWS AI tool. These results demonstrate that automated orchestration of UPF utilizing an AWS AI tool contributes to reducing deployment burden for communications service providers (CSPs), improving operational efficiency, and accelerating service rollout. Traditionally, building and deploying network functions required extensive manual configuration and advanced technical expertise, placing a heavy burden on network operators at CSPs. These manual processes also increased the risk of human error, which complicated fault isolation and recovery during network incidents. These issues contributed to longer service rollout timelines and rising operational costs.

Tokyo, December 3, 2025 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has developed a groundbreaking walk-through face and iris multimodal biometric authentication technology, enabling verification of individuals who are in motion, even in scenarios requiring strict identity verification. This technology combines NEC's world-leading face and iris recognition technologies (*1) to authenticate users (*2) with high accuracy and speed, both indoors and outdoors, even while they are walking. This allows users to enjoy the convenience of hands-free identity verification, while facilities can enhance security and alleviate congestion. NEC will commence proof-of-concept trials with customers in the 2026 fiscal year, aiming for implementation in the 2027 fiscal year at critical facilities that require stringent identity verification, thereby contributing to the realization of a safe, secure, and efficient society. In recent years, biometric authentication has become widespread in important facilities that require strict identity verification. These facilities have traditionally used two-factor authentication combining biometric authentication with card presentation or password entry. This process is often time-consuming, leading to congestion within facilities. Additionally, there are concerns that cards and passwords can be lost, stolen, or forgotten, resulting in growing demand for more secure and convenient identity verification methods. NEC has developed a biometric authentication technology that enhances user convenience and security by leveraging its long-established biometric authentication expertise and cutting-edge AI technology.

NEC Launches AI Agent Service in Japan to Automate Procurement Negotiations Using AI
Tokyo, December 2, 2025 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) will begin offering its "NEC AI Agent Service for Procurement Negotiations" in Japan starting this December. This service utilizes NEC's proprietary AI technology, "Automated Negotiation AI," to autonomously generate optimal transaction terms for procurement operations in the manufacturing industry and to negotiate with suppliers. This service automates complex delivery date and quantity adjustment negotiations in manufacturing, drastically reducing the time spent on transaction negotiations. It enables rapid response to demand fluctuations and significantly improves operational efficiency. NEC conducted a proof-of-concept (POC) at an NEC Group company in November 2024, successfully automating delivery date and quantity adjustments with suppliers for the procurement of approximately 1,300 parts. In this proof-of-concept, the "automated agreement rate"—the percentage of agreements reached solely by AI without procurement personnel intervention—reached 95%. Negotiations concluded under optimal conditions for both the supplier and NEC. This confirmed that the adjustment time from negotiation initiation to completion, which previously took several hours to days, could be reduced to just approximately 80 seconds, achieving a significant improvement in operational efficiency. In recent years, negotiations among stakeholders in the manufacturing industry have become increasingly complex due to diversifying demand and the extensive supply chains spanning from raw material procurement to final product delivery. Amid demands for shortening overall supply chain lead times and adapting to high-mix, low-volume production, procurement operations must address risks in a VUCA environment, making efficiency and speed through digital transformation (DX) advancement an urgent priority. However, many companies lack the capacity to swiftly optimize production systems and procurement plans in response to unexpected fluctuations in demand, hindered by factors such as labor shortages, overly personalized work processes, and cost pressures. Particularly, adjusting delivery dates and quantities for parts and raw materials is a critical task directly linked to production planning and potentially leading to lost sales opportunities. Yet, due to its complexity and the time required for negotiations, many items face the challenge of insufficient coordination. NEC developed Automated Negotiation AI to address these challenges, leveraging its proprietary AI technology cultivated through years of research. This technology enables systems to autonomously negotiate with business partners without human intervention, supporting the formation of optimal agreements. This allows for the coordination of procurement timing even for vast numbers of items that were previously unmanageable manually. By curbing excess inventory, preventing stockouts, and avoiding delivery delays, it creates a supply chain resilient to demand fluctuations. Through this service, NEC resolves challenges in increasingly complex supply chains and contributes to enhancing customer competitiveness.
